"Waves Of War"
       by Jordan Hawkins

Prepare for war on the high seas. “Waves of War” is a swashbuckling good time for any high school band. The piece begins with a call-and-response sea chanty, introduced by the piccolo, which the ensemble expresses fully. Trouble is on the horizon though, as the sea chanty is suddenly interrupted by cannon fire from an enemy ship. As the inevitable battle looms, the piece becomes increasingly dark and tense. The battle section is continuously escalating in intensity and harmonic tension as both sides are giving it all they got. Once the battle reaches its climax the tone abruptly shifts. The harmonically unsettling “Solemn” section is unclear of a winner but soon gives way to a mournful rendition of the sea chanty. Though they suffered heavy losses, they emerge victorious with a defiant last call of the sea chanty. Strengthened in spirit and resolve as they carry on sailing the deep blue sea. “Waves of War” will have audiences and students alike emerged in this epic scene of nautical warfare. So grab you sword and talking parrot as we set sail on “Waves of War.”
