“If Only”
       by  Thomas Juzwiak, ASCAP

Composer's note: “If Only” is another piece for concert band that explores the many tone colors of the wind band. Perfect for a middle school group.

It features:

The key of C Major concert, not always used in a middle school selection. With a modulation to F, then back to C. Emphasis on the woodwinds. Gives the brass a chance to learn how to play in an auxiliary role.

An integrated bass line. Part of the whole. Not just playing Tonics and Dominants. A bass drum part that contributes more than just a beat in the background. Beautiful melodies and counter melodies. A study in blend, balance, intonation, phrasing and tone.

The title is derived from the aged old question that most people ask themselves at one point in their life, merely out of curiosity, “What If”. Nothing serious. Just a question for fun. “What if I went to a different college”? “What if I chose another profession”? etc. “If Only” takes this question one step further. Stated by a person who is unhappy in their current life. “If only I went to a different college”! “If only I chose another profession”! etc.

During the song you can hear this conflict.
