"Back Home" by Thomas Juzwiak, ASCAP
Composer's Note:
“Back Home” is a medium level piece for a good middle school band or emerging high school band. The instrumentation is full and rich. No difficult rhythms. Nice melodies and harmonies.
It tells the story of the aftermath of the American Civil War. Soldiers from both sides are now making there way “Back Home”. Vast plains of wheat and forests with trees abound. The land is still mostly untouched. It paints a pretty, peaceful picture. But the horrors of war still haunt many men ( as depicted through the snare and bass drum).
Many are walking and many are on horseback ( listen for the horse’s footfalls towards the end).
Peace awaits them as they are eager to get back to their simple lives. The time to heal and rebuild has begun.
