"As When The Earth Was New"

Composer's Note:

“As When the Earth was New” is a Flute Duet accompanied by a Clarinet Quintet.

When I was teaching I had some outstanding flute players, as well as an award winning Flute Choir. I also had an award winning Clarinet Choir. So, I decided to combine the two. I have always been impressed by the clean, pure sound of a Flute played well. That is where the title is derived from. When the Earth was new it was clean, pure. No congestion, no big cities, highways, litter, pollution, etc.

In keeping with the theme I wanted to keep the instrumentation small. I didn’t want to clutter the piece with the backing of a full band.

The 2 Flutes trade the melody back and forth. When listening to the computer generated recording it all sounds like one Flute. You have to imagine 2 different Flute players with 2 distinct tones.

The Clarinet Choir also gets the melody from time to time to let the Flutes rest a bit. There is an optional Eb Alto Clarinet part that doubles the 4th Clarinet part.

A great selection to showcase 2 of your better flute players as well as demonstrate the versatility of the Clarinets.
